As we embark on a new year, we were curious to uncover some of the key interior design trends for 2025 and innovations we can expect to see.
Mark von Herkomer, CEO of luxury development company Bloomsbury Construction Group, and Fran Lee, Interior Design Masters finalist and founder of The Flourish Group, share their predictions.
1. Shades of Brown
Dulux may have identified the vibrant yellow “True Joy” as its colour of 2025, but Mark von Herkomer predicts a more down-to-earth approach to colour in the year ahead. “Colour-wise, various earthy shades of brown have been very prevalent in 2024, and look set to continue in 2025,” he says.
Homes & Gardens colour editor Emily Boorman agrees: “Throughout 2024, we’ve seen dark, earthy colours used to create cosy and warming spaces. Dark green and chocolate brown are among the most popular for good reason; they have a relaxed quality while adding plenty of drama to our homes.”
We’ve seen nature-inspired tones splashed across Instagram grids and Pinterest boards, while colour trendsetter Pantone has earmarked Mocha Mousse, an appealing milk chocolate, as its hue for the coming year.
2. Biophilic design
Derived from biophilia, which means “a love of the living”, biophilic design embraces the natural world – bringing the outside into our homes and workplaces. The concept has existed for centuries, but its popularity increased during the pandemic, when many of us were spending more time at home, looking to houseplants and desk gardens for our nature fix.
Interaction with nature has been shown to enhance mental wellbeing: a study by Nature Communications revealed that time spent in natural surroundings is worth about £4.5 trillion a year in improved mental health.
3. Monochrome marble
Colourful marble in pinks, purples and greens may have had a moment recently, but for 2025 it’s all about monochrome. Both classic and contemporary, white or grey marble with black veining honours the Carrara stone that has been quarried in Tuscany since Roman times. It’s both elegant and versatile, complementing a range of interior styles.
Bloomsbury Construction Group have collaborated on projects with companies including Salvatori, Eggersmann, Bulthaup, and Designspace London, who use exquisite marbles to create elegant bathroom units, kitchen countertops and splashbacks.
4. Rooms that multitask
As the founder of the not-for-profit Flourish Group, which designs inspirational community hubs, Fran Lee knows how to create a space that fulfils multiple functions. Our homes will need to diversify in 2025 too, she says: “As our work-life balance continues to blur post-pandemic, our spaces are having to work harder for us. 2025 will see a continuation of the multi-functional space as a necessity.”
Fran’s designs feature ingenious solutions that metamorphise according to need. “Think office desks in cupboards to be hidden at dusk, and laptop-friendly breakfast bars complete with plugs, serving breakfast in the morning and hosting Zooms post-school run,” she says.
5. Home automation
Other home automation innovations include smart windows, with glass that switches from clear to shaded to opaque depending on the level of light or privacy required. Synchronised audio systems and advanced air purifiers enhance home-working, while smart security and surveillance systems offer safety and reassurance when we’re away from home.
6. Sustainable solutions
